Things to Do with Toddlers Near Greenwich: Our Favourite Local Spots

Written by Vivian, Owner & Director at Blossoming Minds Daycare

Greenwich is genuinely one of the better parts of London to be raising a young child. The mix of open green space, riverside paths, free museums and community-run activities means there is almost always something on, whatever the weather. We take our children out regularly from Blossoming Minds Daycare Greenwich, and over time you get a strong sense of what actually works for toddlers and what sounds good on paper but ends up being a bit much.

Here is what we keep coming back to.

Greenwich Park

This is the obvious one, but it earns its place. The park is large enough that toddlers feel like they are genuinely exploring, and the mix of open slopes, wooded paths and the formal garden gives them different textures and challenges across a single visit. The children we take from nursery absolutely love the hill. There is something about rolling down a long slope that never gets old at this age.

The playground near the Blackheath Gate end is well-equipped and usually busy enough to feel lively without being overwhelming. If you are coming from Westcombe Park, Maze Hill or Blackheath, you can walk in from different gates depending on where you are parked or getting off the train.

The National Maritime Museum

Free to enter and genuinely toddler-friendly, the Maritime Museum has wide open ground floors, interactive areas and enough visual interest to keep a two or three year old engaged without needing to stay for long. We find toddlers respond really well to the big ship models and the activity areas. The café is decent and the building itself is easy to navigate with a buggy.

They run family sessions and activity trails during school holidays, so it is worth checking their website before you go.

Charlton Park

A slightly quieter alternative to Greenwich Park, Charlton Park has a good playground, open grass and a café that is relaxed about muddy wellies and small children taking their time. We often suggest this one to families in Charlton or Vanbrugh Park who want something a bit closer to home. It tends to be less busy at weekends than Greenwich Park, which some parents find easier with toddlers who get overwhelmed in crowds.

Hornfair Park, Woolwich

If you are coming from Woolwich or further east, Hornfair Park has a large playground with equipment suited to different ages, including sections that work well for under fives. The open field is good for kicking a ball around, which is one of those simple activities that toddlers find endlessly satisfying.

Deptford Park

Worth mentioning for families coming from Deptford or Lewisham. The park has had investment in recent years and the playground area is well-maintained. It has a slightly more neighbourhood feel to it, which some families prefer over the busier tourist spots.

Local Libraries

This one is easy to overlook but we think it is one of the most valuable free resources available. Greenwich libraries run regular Rhyme Time and story sessions for under fives. For toddlers who are at an age where language is really starting to take off, sitting and listening to stories read aloud alongside other children does something that is hard to replicate at home. We do this at nursery too, and the difference between a child who has had lots of shared reading and one who has had less is something we notice over time.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Outings with Toddlers

  • Keep it short. A toddler who has had a brilliant forty-five minutes will remember it fondly. The same toddler kept out for two hours will be tired and difficult by the end.
  • Go at their pace. The best outings we do from nursery are the ones where we follow what the children are interested in rather than sticking rigidly to a plan.
  • Build in a snack stop. Hunger is the enemy of a good trip out.
  • Let them get muddy. Clothes wash. The experience of digging, splashing and climbing is doing real developmental work.
  • Familiar routes repeated often are just as valuable as new destinations. Toddlers often love revisiting the same place and noticing what has changed.

What We Do at Nursery

At Blossoming Minds, our children go outside every single day regardless of the weather. We make use of the local parks and playgrounds around SE10 as part of our regular routine, and those outings are always linked to what children are curious about at the time. We also have our indoor Energy Hub, which gives children space to move freely on days when the weather is really challenging.

We see first-hand how much a good run around in the morning settles children and opens them up to focused play afterwards. It is not just about burning energy. It is about giving children genuine sensory and physical experiences that feed into everything else they do.

If you would like to see the nursery and get a feel for how we work, you are very welcome to book a show-around at a time that suits you. If you would prefer something more relaxed first, our free weekly Stay and Play sessions run every Wednesday from 10am and are a good way to meet the team and explore the space with your child alongside you.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best free activities for toddlers in Greenwich?

Greenwich Park, the National Maritime Museum and local libraries are all free and genuinely well-suited to toddlers. The library story and rhyme sessions in particular are something we encourage families to make use of regularly. Repeated visits to familiar green spaces are often just as valuable as trying somewhere new.

How do I know if an activity is right for my toddler's age and stage?

A good rule of thumb is to follow their lead. If they are engaged and curious, it is working. If they are flagging or overwhelmed, it is time to leave, and that is fine. Short, positive outings are far more valuable than long ones that end in tears. Toddlers thrive on routine and repetition, so revisiting the same places often works very well.

Does Blossoming Minds Daycare take children on outings?

Yes. We take children out regularly to the parks and playgrounds near our nursery in Greenwich SE10. All outings are risk assessed with appropriate adult-to-child ratios. We also make use of our indoor Energy Hub on days when the weather makes outdoor trips less practical. Getting outside every day is a core part of how we work.

Can I visit Blossoming Minds Daycare before deciding whether to enrol?

Absolutely. You can [book a show-around](/book) at a time that suits you for a private look around the nursery. If you would prefer something more informal first, our free Stay and Play runs every Wednesday from 10am to 11am and is open to children aged 3 months to 3 years. It is a relaxed way to meet the team with no commitment involved.
