Overview
Daffodil is our room for babies from birth to two, and everything about it is built around one idea: at this age, relationships come before anything else. Each baby has a key person who gets to know their particular rhythm, their sounds, their way of asking to be held, and works with you to follow it rather than impose one from outside. With a 1:3 ratio, that consistency is actually possible day to day, not just a promise on paper.
A Typical Day
The room itself is calm and sensory-rich, designed for the kind of unhurried exploration babies need. When it is time to rest, babies settle in our dedicated sleep room with their own comforters close by, following their own sleep pattern rather than a fixed nursery schedule. Outdoor time is shared with other rooms rather than a daily fixture, so it happens as part of a wider rhythm across the nursery, alongside indoor sensory play, tummy time, and plenty of time simply being held and talked to.
Care & Development
This is the age where the prime areas of development are really doing the work: a baby learning to trust that a need will be met, the first babbles that will become first words, the early physical milestones of reaching, rolling, crawling and eventually walking. Our focus in Daffodil is squarely on first words, first trust and first discoveries, because everything else in a child's learning journey builds from that foundation. Our team includes people with decades of experience in early years and several who hold Level 7 qualifications, and because we are a genuinely multicultural staff speaking multiple languages between us, babies growing up bilingual or multilingual are just as likely to hear a familiar sound from home here.

Common questions
Settling in is led by your baby's key person and goes at whatever pace your child needs, with short visits building up gradually so your baby has time to feel secure before a full day. We will ask you about your baby's routines, comforters and feeding patterns beforehand so the transition feels as familiar as possible. There is no fixed timetable for this because every baby is different, and we would rather take longer than rush it.
We follow your baby's own sleep rhythm rather than a set nursery nap time, and settling happens in our dedicated sleep room away from the busier play areas. Familiar comforters from home stay close by, which helps babies settle in an environment that is not their own. If your baby's sleep pattern changes, your key person will talk to you about it so home and nursery stay in step.
It means a member of staff is caring for no more than three babies at any time, which at this age matters enormously because babies need to be held, responded to and spoken with far more than older children do. It is what makes it realistic for a key person to actually know your baby's cues, rather than just their name. That closeness is also what allows staff to spot small changes in mood, feeding or development early.
Long before babies say their first word, staff are narrating what they are doing, naming objects, singing and responding to babbles as if they are already a conversation, because that back-and-forth is how language actually develops. First words are one of our named learning focuses in this room precisely because the groundwork for them starts so early. With a multilingual staff team, babies growing up with more than one language at home are likely to hear something familiar here too.
Our sensory room is available to support children with SEND as well as any child who benefits from that kind of calm, structured environment, and our key person approach means changes in a baby's development are usually noticed early. Our director's background in nursing and midwifery adds a further layer of experience when thinking through a baby's individual needs. We would always talk to you first and work together on what support looks like, rather than deciding anything without you.
You will get a daily update covering feeding, sleep and how your baby has been, so the small details of their day do not get lost. Beyond the day to day, termly parents' meetings and progress reports give a fuller picture of where your baby is developmentally. It is meant to feel like a genuine back-and-forth rather than a form filled in for the sake of it.
